Lawmakers from 18 countries worldwide in Jerusalem to express their opposition to boycotts of Israel

JERUSALEM (EJP)—26 lawmakers from 18 countries in Europe, South America and Africa are on a visit in Israel to express their strong opposition to boycott and in particular to the planned EU decision to label products coming from the Israeli settlements.

Their visitis taking place under the auspices of the annual conference of the Israel Allies Foundation, an international parliamentary pro-Israel lobby group.

Ther conference is sponsored by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ).

The members of the delegation met Tuesday with three members of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament who also belong to the lobby: Robert Ilatov (Yisrael Beytenu), Yoel Hasson (Zionist Union) and Anat Berko (Likud). They also met with President Reuven Rivlin and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon.

The main event of the visit took place Tuesday evening at the Arena Stadium in Jerusalem with the participation of Christians from more than 90 countries.

On Wednesday, the delegation visitsa number of settlements,including a Rami Levy supermarket in Sh’ar Binyamin where the parliament members will hear from Jews and Arabs who work together everyday. The tour will also include a visit with Bat Galim Shaer, the mother of one of the boys kidnapped and killed by Hamas during last summer’s war.

They will also meet with Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, who is the government member in charge offighting boycotts against Israel, as well as with Social Equality Minister Gila Gamliel and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

On Thursday, the MPs will draft and sign a resolution declaring their support for Israel and vowing to take a stance against racist, anti-Israel movements such as Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions (BDS).

The lawmakers come from an array of countries around the world, including Britain, Italy, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Greece, Finland, Canada, South Africa, Uganda, Guatemala, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay.
