The spring semester is ending with a massive crisis across all levels of American education as campus takeovers, faculty and student walkouts, and harassment of Jewish students have brought many campuses to a standstill. The frequently heard calls of ‘death to Israel’ are complemented by ‘death to America’ and reflect the fusion of Islamist and Communist ideologies that motivate student leaders and their supporting organizations. Whether and how institutions such as Columbia can salvage their reputations and futures is unclear but the breakdown of order and eruption of antisemitism represents a new phase in American history. BDS Monitor Live Speaker: Alex Joffe
Dr. Alex Joffe is editor of SPME’s monthly BDS Monitor. He is an archaeologist and historian specializing in the Middle East and contemporary international affairs. Educated at Cornell University and the University of Arizona, he is also a Shillman-Ingerman fellow of the Middle East Forum. Among other topics he has written extensively on the BDS movement and contemporary antisemitism.
