The French Chapter of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME), supported by the Board of Directors and the Task Force of SPME on “Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions”, applaud the wisdom of Pascal Binczak, President of Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis, to protect the scientific integrity of this institution, by not hosting a conference on “new sociological, historical and legal approaches for international boycott: Israel: an apartheid State?”, despite legal and political pressures exerted by the organizers.
Such gatherings are often not academic and are dominated by polemics with no allowance for civil or scholarly debate which is antithetical to academic values and integrity which form the basis of academic inquiry.
We believe that university administrations have the responsibility to uphold the standards of academic and scientific rigor and that if any proposed program does not meet those standards, they are under no obligation to host it.

La section française de “Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME)”, soutenue par le directoire et le département de SPME s’occupant de la campagne “Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions”, applaudit la sagesse de Pascal Binczak, président de l’Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis, de protéger l’intégrité scientifique de cette institution, en n’ayant pas accueilli un colloque sur “Des nouvelles approches sociologiques, historiques et juridiques à l’appel au boycott international : Israël : un État d’apartheid?”, et ce malgré les pressions judiciaires et politiques exercées par les organisateurs.
De tels rassemblements ne sont souvent pas académiques et sont dominés par des polémiques qui ne permettent pas le débat civil ou scientifique, ce qui est antithétique avec les valeurs et l’intégrité académique qui forme la base de la recherche à l’université.
Nous pensons que les administrations d’universités ont la responsabilité de maintenir les standards de rigueur académique et scientifique et que si un programme proposé ne correspond pas à ces standards, elles ne sont pas dans l’obligation de l’accueillir.
