JERUSALEM (CNN) — Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were meeting Saturday night in Jerusalem.

News footage showed the men and their aides sitting down at a table at Olmert’s residence.

While officials have declined to elaborate on what the meeting will entail, reports are saying that one topic of conversation will be the recent cease-fire in Gaza between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Israel Army Radio Web site reports that they will discuss the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier who was kidnapped in last June; the cease-fire between Israelis and the Palestinians in Gaza; and the possibility of early Palestinian legislative elections.

Ynet — the daily Yediot Ahronot newspaper’s Web site — reports that a senior Palestinian source is saying the meeting will focus on the strengthening and consolidating of the cease-fire and the possible extending of it to the West Bank.

Relations between Fatah, Hamas tense

The meeting comes amid continuing tensions in the Palestinian territories between Abbas’ Fatah party and the Hamas movement, which controls the government.

Last week, Abbas called for early legislative elections, a move strongly opposed by Hamas.

This is the first summit between Olmert and Abbas as leaders. Abbas has met with former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Olmert recently paid a visit to Jordan’s King Abdullah discussing a wide range of issues, including how to improve deteriorating conditions in the Palestinian territories.

An adviser to King Abdullah told CNN that the king is urging Fatah and Hamas leaders to meet in Jordan for talks aimed to end the violence between the two Palestinian factions.

Also, a source told CNN that the topic of the Badr Brigade — a Palestinian brigade in the Jordanian army — came up in the conversation between Olmert and the king.

There had been reports that this unit could be moved to Gaza to help bolster the position of Abbas.

It is an idea that has been floated before and it would need Israel’s approval. The Badr Brigade comprises several thousand people.
