At its meeting on June 2, the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure expressed concern with a motion approved on May 30 by the congress of the British University and College Union, which, while it does not call directly for an academic boycott of Israeli institutions, “encourages[s] [UCU] members to consider the moral implications of existing and proposed links with Israeli academic institutions.” Committee A agreed that this motion, to the extent that it is meant to encourage an academic boycott, is contrary to the Association’s position condemning such boycotts. (Committee A’s report on academic boycotts appears in the September-October 2006 issue of Academe, pp. 39-43).
