Professor Steinberg mentions Stuart Rees inviting Hanan Ashrawi to accept the 50,000 AUD “Peace” Prize in 2003, at Sydney University. The prize was awarded by Bob Carr, Labor Premier of New South Wales at the time — despite protest from Jewish university students at all Australian campuses. Mr Carr answered by asserting that Ashrawi was a wonderful spokeswoman for peace in the Middle East, and that Carr himself supported peaceful settlement of the “Israeli-Palestinian Problem”. Hypocrisy and ideology in one fell swoop!

Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME) is not-for-profit [501 (C) (3)], grass-roots community of scholars who have united to promote honest, fact-based, and civil discourse, especially in regard to Middle East issues. We believe that ethnic, national, and religious hatreds, including anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism, have no place in our institutions, disciplines, and communities. We employ academic means to address these issues.
