An Israeli researcher was among the recipients of an honorary doctorate from Britain’s Oxford University.

Ada Yonath, professor of structural biology at the Weizmann Institute in Rechovot, on Wednesday was granted the prestigious honorary title of Doctor of Science in recognition of her research in mapping structures of proteins, which offers the prospect of improving existing drugs and developing new ones.

Yonath was one of seven eminent researchers and intellectuals who were granted an honorary degree just a couple of weeks after the British University and College Professors’ Union adopted a resolution which favors boycotting Israeli academic institutions and researchers. The UCU resolution was rejected by Russell Group, the association of Britain’s leading research universities, of which Oxford University is a member.
