THE AARON AND CECILE GOLDMAN VISITING ISRAELI PROFESSORSHIP

DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT

GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY

2011-12

The Department of Government at Georgetown University offers annual appointment to a distinguished visiting Israeli professor. The position, which serves as an intellectual bridge between Israel and the United States, was established in 1979 through the efforts of Professor William V. O’Brien. Funding for the Professorship has come from many sources, but the generous contribution of the late Aaron and Cecile Goldman made possible the permanent endowment of this position in 1988.

The Goldman Professor teaches full-time for the academic year, which begins in late August and ends in late May. Normally the Professor offers two undergraduate courses each semester, at least one of which must deal with Israel and/or the contemporary Middle East. Applicants should hold the doctoral degree or its equivalent in Political Science or Modern Middle East History and should be well-established as excellent scholars and teachers. In past years, the following Israeli scholars have held the Professorship: Amatzia Baram, Tamar Meisels, Avi Beker, Yossi Nevo, Abraham Ben-Zvi, Azar Gat, Arie Kacowicz, Yossi Shain, Joseph Kostiner, Rivka Yadlin,, Martin Kramer, Raymond Cohen, Haggai Erlich, Efraim Inbar, Ehud Sprinzak, Avner Yaniv, Yaacov Roi, Amnon Sella, Aharon Klieman, Dan Horowitz, Ya’ir Evron, Moshe Ma’oz, and Eytan Gilboa.

Applicants should provide a letter including possible courses to be taught and a current resume, and arrange for two letters of reference to be sent directly to the address below. Applications should be received by December 1, 2010, though the position will remain open until filled. Selection of the Goldman Professor is normally made in December or early January.
