ASMEA is accepting applications from our members for the Association’s Research Grants program. A limited number of grants will awarded in sums of $1,000-$2,000, and will be allocated on a competitive basis to professors and senior graduate students who apply for funding to support scholarly work for publication in the fields of Middle Eastern and African studies, and related fields.

To apply for an ASMEA research grant, please submit an abstract no longer than two pages in length that describes the project and the actual work that will be undertaken along with your updated curriculum vitae and current contact information to: info@asmeascholars.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

All abstracts must explicitly document new research that is relevant to the Association’s mandate; report the basic elements of the project clearly and concisely; describe exactly how a grant would be used; and, offer persuasive justification that the research undertaken will further discourse in Middle East studies, African studies and/or their related disciplines.

Appropriate topics include scholarly research in the following areas:

  • Regional issues (the countries and regions of the Middle East and Africa);
  • Functional issues including but not limited to politics and liberalization, economic development and business trends, regional and local conflicts, refugees and migration; women’s issues; and, law and criminal justice systems.
  • Other issues in history, political science, security studies or other fields that further scholarship on topics of concern to ASMEA.

The Association sets no restrictions in terms of applicants’ academic disciplines and welcomes proposals that meet ASMEA’s mandate from an inter-disciplinary approach. Applications are due by January 15, 2009 and will be accepted only from members in good standing as of that date.

ASMEA retains the right of first refusal for publication of research resulting from grants awarded through our Research Grant program. If ASMEA chooses not to publish the results of research derived from grant monies awarded via the program, and the work appears in publication elsewhere, the author will be obligated to acknowledge receipt of funding from ASMEA.

All applicants-successful or unsuccessful-will be notified via e-mail about the outcome of their application no later than January 31, 2009. Upon selection, awardees will agree to project terms (including reprint guidelines) and a timeline with ASMEA before release of funds. Work must commence immediately upon agreement of terms. Awards will be made in two parts (half upon notification of selection for an award, and half upon completion of a recipient’s research project). All work related to the grant must be completed no later than June 30, 2009.

All submissions will be considered but decisions to allocate grants are made exclusively by ASMEA’s grant awards committee.
