The beginning of the academic year sees the BDS movement focusing attacks on the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which are making inroads among faculty and students alike. Meanwhile opposition to BDS in politics has largely split along party lines with progressives and far left Democrats in favor, most Republicans opposed, and mainstream Democrats caught in between. Coupled with the sudden antisemitism and free speech crises involving Elon Musk and ‘X’ (aka Twitter), the stage is set for Israel, its supporters, and Jews in general, to be at the center of multifaceted controversies.

Dr. Alex Joffe is editor of SPME’s monthly BDS Monitor. He is an archaeologist and historian specializing in the Middle East and contemporary international affairs. Educated at Cornell University and the University of Arizona, he is also a Shillman-Ingerman fellow of the Middle East Forum. Among other topics he has written extensively on the BDS movement and contemporary antisemitism.
