As the Israeli campaign against Hamas in Gaza continues the effects on the American landscape have been profound. Universities are in turmoil, with pro-BDS students and faculty pitted against administrations and donors for control over campuses. The hatred and harassment of Jews and Israelis have been fully exposed, along with the moral weakness of university leaderships. In politics, the Democratic Party is split, with Arab and Muslim Americans angry with President Biden’s support for Israel threatening to stay home in 2024. Few corrective measures are in sight, portending a tumultuous 2024.

Dr. Alex Joffe is editor of SPME’s monthly BDS Monitor. He is an archaeologist and historian specializing in the Middle East and contemporary international affairs. Educated at Cornell University and the University of Arizona, he is also a Shillman-Ingerman fellow of the Middle East Forum. Among other topics he has written extensively on the BDS movement and contemporary antisemitism.
