SPME President Issues Proactive Israel Apartheid Week Alert for Faculty

  • 0

SPME-ers,

The SPME Board of Directors, Executive Director Sam Edelman and I are trying to move SPME to being more proactive to events on campus. To this end, I want to alert you that the Sixth Annual Israeli Apartheid Week (Solidarity in Action: Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) is to take place on campuses during the first two weeks of March. You can find more information at
www.apartheidweek.org .

We are asking you to contact us at spme@spme.org if you are aware of any such event being planned, or taking place, on your campus. We are hoping this year to be able to get a much fuller picture of what these events are, who the speakers are, where they are taking place, the kinds of audience they draw, and so on. Any information you can give us on your local situation would be helpful for us now and for future planning.

There are some rumors are that at least some of the events this year will focus on human rights violations, especially in connection with
last year’s “Operation Cast Lead” and the Goldstone Report. There may even be some mock trials. In light of these rumors, we are posting materials on our website that may be helpful in understanding some of the issues with the Goldstone report. A two part essay by Richard Landes, and a piece by Alan Dershowitz are presented on our website and in the Faculty Forum Roundtable Section of this SPME Faculty Forum. We expect to have some additional material posted within the next week or so.

Canadian Academics for Peace in the Middle East are planning a series of events across Canada in anticipation of IAW. They have some
interesting ideas on how to handle the situation there. For information about them and some of their ideas you can go to
http://academicsforpeace.ca .Hopefully their experience this year will be helpful for some of you as well.

Again, please keep us informed of any events of which you become aware.
