by
Dr. Edward S. Beck, Past President, SPME and
Chair Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Task Force
With the pending start of the academic year, SPME is announcing that it is beginning to collect data on real or suspected boycotts of Israeli academics or Israeli academic institutions. SPME is increasingly aware that this academic year there may increase calls for academic boycotts and actual overt or “silent” academic boycotts being implemented against Israel academics or Israeli academic institutions. With our Network of 55,000 faculty Network Participants worldwide, we want to start documenting and recording such information and review any evidence for suggested action strategies, as well as data collection.
When submitting information, it is important that one submit any evidence one has to support such a claim and that if the person making the claim is not actual person referenced in the claim, the individual reporting the claim have the permission of the referenced person. Contact information for all involved should be provided as well.
Cases involving boycotts against Israeli academics and Israeli academic institutions include, but are not limited to:
a) discrimination by journals or editorial boards on the basis of being Israeli or from an Israeli academic institution or,
b) discrimination for visas for conference or research travels on the basis of being an Israeli academic or from an Israeli academic institution or,
c) public statements of boycott policies against Israeli academics or Israeli academic institution by any college, university, academic institution, organization, union, student or other individual or entity or,
d) evidence of any “silent boycott” activity on the basis of being an Israeli academic or from an Israeli academic institution.
Any discriminatory evidence, official or unofficial should also be submitted with this material.
Cases should be submitted to Dr. Edward S. Beck, SPME Past President and Chair BDS Task Force [email protected]
