Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, an organization of some 28,000 academics worldwide, wishes to express its dismay at the decision of the Spanish Ministry of Housing to expel Ariel College from the international Solar Decathlon. As an organization dedicated to honest and accurate discussion and debate, we find the actions of the Spanish government particularly unhelpful. We are especially dismayed that this decision was not based on academic or technological reasons consistent with the competition, but on purely and admittedly political grounds. We note that the expelled team had competed successfully up to this point and in fact had won a place in the finals. We would have hoped that a competition as important as Solar Decathlon would be based on matters of design, science and technology. The invocation of politics by the Spanish Ministry of Housing to eliminate a clearly competent entry is an astounding violation of good scientific and academic principles, and certainly does little to foster international cooperation.
We fully understand that the issues in the Middle East, in general, and between Israelis and Palestinians in particular are complicated and profound. If there were an easy solution, it would have been found and implemented by now. Honest efforts towards peacemaking are going on now at many levels with some signs of hope being expressed for the first time in a long time. In this context it has to be clearly understood that any solution to the situation will have to be fashioned by the parties themselves. The determination by the Spanish Ministry of Housing to step in and take a stand on what such a solution should be is not only inappropriate, but
fundamentally partisan.
The Spanish Ministry of Housing has chosen to eliminate an academic institution of higher learning that includes both Jews and Arabs in its student body and is thus training diverse students in the Middle East to work and live together. By eliminating such an institution, the Spanish Ministry has acted in violation of the very principles it is claiming to uphold.
Finally, we wish to express our fear that the actions of the Spanish government could serve as a precedent for governments to reach into academic competitions and make political determinations as to who may compete and who may not. The protection of science and scholarship from government interference is a long-held value in the West.
For all these reasons, we find the decision regrettable and obstructive to reasonable negotiations for peace in the Middle East. We urge the Spanish Ministry of Housing to reconsider its decision.

Como organización dedicada al debate y discusión sincera, encontramos las acciones del Gobierno Español de ninguna ayuda. Estamos consternados porque esta decisión no fue basada en razones académicas o tecnológicas consistentes con el concurso, sino exclusivamente en base, razones políticas manifiestas. Vemos ante todo que el grupo que fue expulsado ha competido con éxito hasta este momento y de hecho ha ganado un puesto en las finales. Habríamos esperado que una competencia tan importante como el Solar Decathlon hubiese sido basada exclusivamente en categorías de diseño, ciencia y tecnología. La invocación de la política por el Ministerio de Vivienda Español para eliminar una contribución claramente competente es una violación asombrosa de principios buenos, científicos y académicos y de hecho contribuye poco en apoyar la cooperación internacional.
Entendemos completamente que los asuntos en el Medio Oriente en general y especialmente entre Israelíes y Palestinos son complicados y profundos. Si existiera una solución fácil, se habría encontrado e implementado ya. Hay actualmente esfuerzos sinceros en muchos niveles con señales de esperanza expresadas por primera vez dentro de largo tiempo. En este contexto hay que entender claramente que cualquier solución para la situación necesita ser formada por los partidos mismos. La decisión del Ministerio de Vivienda Español de intervenir y tomar posición sobre cual o tal solución no es solamente inapropiada sino también fundamentalmente partidaria.
El Ministerio de Vivienda decidió de eliminar una institución académica de enseñanza superior que incluye tanto Judíos como Árabes en su cuerpo estudiantil. Por lo tanto es una institución que entrena estudiantes de diferentes orígenes en el Medio Oriente para trabajar y vivir juntos. Con la eliminación de una institución como esta, el Ministerio Español actuó violando estos mismos principios que dice que esta perpetuando.
Finalmente queremos expresar nuestro temor que la actitud del Gobierno Español podría servir como precedente para gobiernos de intervenir en competencias académicas y tomar decisiones políticas sobre quien puede competir y quién no. La protección de la ciencia y enseñanza de intervenciones por gobiernos es un principio que se está manteniendo hace mucho tiempo en el Oeste.
Por todas estas razones encontramos esta decisión lamentable y no favorable para negociaciones razonables para con la Paz en el Medio Oriente. Ahincamos por lo tanto que se reconsidere esta decisión.
