Establishing SPME in Spain and Latin America?

Dear colleagues from Spain and Latin America,

Last year the Ariel University Center was expelled from the Solar Decathlon Europe, after qualifying to participate in the final competition, exclusively for political reasons. Many of you have supported our statement of Protest against this decision taken by the Spanish government which affected not only Israeli students but also Arab students at this institution.

PACBI, the organization that focuses on the academic boycott against Israel, celebrated this decision as one of its mayor victories.

At the end of October the World Education Forum took place in Palestine. Events were scheduled in Beirut, Haifa, Gaza and Jerusalem. The organizers see this event also in the context of the “occupation of Palestine and the solidarity with the Palestinians and their resistance against occupation, apartheid and colonialismhttp://www.wef-palestine.org/bds.

SPME was founded in 2002. We are a grass-roots community of nearly 60,000 university and college professors, researchers, administrators, teachers, librarians, and students on more than 3,500 campuses worldwide.

Nearly 40 campuses in the US and abroad now have their own chapters (see SPME Chapters ).

As our Mission Statement says, we envision and strive for peace in the Middle East: a world in which Israel exists as a sovereign Jewish state within secure borders and her neighbors achieve their legitimate peaceful aspirations.

We are concerned that academic discourse is increasingly influenced by ideological distortions, politically biased scholarship, and agenda-driven speakers who demonize Israel and Zionism as bearing full responsibility for the Middle East conflict.

Our mission is to inform, motivate, and encourage faculty to use their academic skills and disciplines on campus, in classrooms, and in academic publications to develop effective responses to ideological distortions.

We are a “big tent” open for scholars of all disciplines, faith groups, and nationalities who share our desire for peace and our commitments to academic freedom, academic integrity, and honest debate.

We think that with 400 Spanish speaking colleagues and more than 250 network subscribers from Brazil and Portugal, it is time to consider establishing chapters in Latin America and Spain, and in the near future also to start a Spanish Edition of the Faculty Forum.

We would be interested in getting your feedback. Please contact us when you intend to become active and are willing to establish an SPME Chapter in Spain or Latin America.

Please feel free to contact us.
