Argentina: Jewish Students Complained about Antisemitic Graffiti on
the Philosophy Department Building at the University of Buenos Aires
(further to previous reporting on the subject)
Date: 23 August
Country: Argentina
On 23rd August 2006, a group of Jewish students in the Department of
Philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires sent a letter to the Department
Administrations in which they decried “the high level of antisemtism and hatred of
Jews going on now within our revered department. We demand justice”. The
students pointed out that on both the external walls and in the classrooms there
have been a great deal of antisemitic graffiti and antisemitic leaflets have
been distributed. Some of the posters and leaflets are signed by the
“Revolutionary Communist Youth (JCR)” and the “Revolutionary Communist Party (PCR)”.
The graffiti read, among other things, “Israel=a Nazi State”, “Let us stop
the Israeli Nazi attack”, “Death to the Jews”, “Jews are bastards”.
The students said that they had considered complaining to the Representative
of the Jewish Communities (DAIA) and to the “Institute against
Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI)”, but decided that they “prefer to trust the
Department’s internal justice apparatus”.
