John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago’s Department of Political Science and Stephen Walt of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, who have collaborated on several pieces about the Middle East, will discuss their recent working paper, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, and its response in the academic, political, and social spheres. They will discuss how the Israel lobby, one of the most powerful interest groups in American politics, influences US foreign policy in ways that are detrimental to both the United States and Israel. This event will be moderated by Dean Emeritus Peter Krogh.
John J. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and the co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1982. Dr Mearsheimer has published three books: Conventional Deterrence (1983), which won the Edgar S. Furniss, Jr., Book Award; Liddell Hart and the Weight of History (1988); and The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001), which won the Joseph Lepgold Book Prize.
Stephen M. Walt is Robert and Renee Belfer Professor of International Affairs and Academic Dean at the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. He holds a BA in international relations from StanfordUniversity and an MA and PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. He previously taught at PrincetonUniversity and the University of Chicago, where he served as Master of the Social Science Collegiate Division and Deputy Dean of Social Sciences. Dr. Walt is the author of The Origins of Alliances, which received the 1988 Edgar S. Furniss National Security Book Award; Revolution and War; and Taming American Power: The Global Response to U.S. Primacy.
