CUNY Academics Call for Union Leadership Focus on CUNY Issues

  • 0

The Professional Staff Congress (PSC), a local of the American
Federation of Teachers (AFT) that represents more than 20,000 academic
and staff employees of the City University of New York (CUNY), is
holding an election; ballots are due to be mailed on April 1.

Like faculty unions in Britain and California, the leadership of the
PSC-CUNY has been neglecting the concerns of its members. Instead, its
leadership recently promulgated resolutions critical of Israel’s actions
in Gaza. The resolutions generated lengthy debate before they were
defeated or withdrawn.

In the upcoming PSC-CUNY elections, efforts are being made to unseat the
incumbents and to refocus the PSC on protecting faculty rights. Faculty
behind these efforts have asked for SPME’s help.

If you teach at any of the CUNY campuses or know anyone who does and
would be sympathetic to these efforts, please email:

She will be in touch regarding this election as well as future
organization of an SPME chapter at CUNY.
