ASMEA Annual Conference

October 22-24, 2009
Washington, D.C.

The second annual conference of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) will be held October 22-24, 2009 at the Key Bridge Marriott in Washington, D.C.

Entitled, The Middle East and Africa: Historic Connections and Strategic Bridges, the conference will feature presentations and roundtables that demonstrate the inter-relationships between the two regions over time with special emphasis on the historical, political, economic, religious, security and cultural links between them.

Call for Papers

The Association currently is seeking proposals to present papers at the 2009 conference. Abstracts should pertain to theme of the conference and consist of a one page outline of the subject. All contact data must be attached to the proposal (name, email, phone number, affiliation). The due date for proposals is June 1, 2009. Proposals should be sent to: info@asmeascholars.org.

ASMEA members from any discipline who are tenured or untenured faculty, or affiliated with a recognized research institution may submit proposals to participate in the conference. Unique proposals from senior graduate students (ABD) also will be considered. Participants on the panels may attend the conference free of charge. All decisions to invite presenters to participate on panels will be made by the Association’s officers and members of the Academic Council. The due date for completed papers is Sept. 1, 2009.

Panels
Planned panels are still under consideration, but the following are among the areas of scholarship that ASMEA is interested in exploring at the conference:

  • ·The shared histories and spread of Christianity and Islam from the Middle East to Africa as well as the modern threats to these and indigenous religions in the regions.
  • How current and future strategic and economic concerns are reshaping old rivalries in the regions.
  • The prognosis for civil society and economic development in resource-based economies in the regions.
  • The issues relating to conflict and crime in Africa and the Middle East and their mitigation including genocide, terrorism, organized crime, corruption piracy, truth & reconciliation commissions, and democratization.
  • Indigenous emerging leaders/powers, their influence on the regions they inhabit.

Abstracts that show new research on these and other issues that pertain to the over-arching theme of the conference-the inter-relationships between the two regions over time-will receive consideration for presentation.

Referees and Discussants
