Im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe Apropos…

Interpretations of the past are often the domain of historians. However artists also dealt with history from the vantage point of internal personal, social and political concerns. This is true also in the case of Jewish History. Elements of their history, especially in the modern period, were interpreted by Jewish and non-Jewish artists that offer a unique way of thinking of their past. Who was part of the Jewish pantheon? what issues in modern Jewish history riveted the artists and interpreters of Jewish life? The artists were clearly working from their contemporary context, turning to the past to make sense of their present. They worked as historians and work to this very day. How can these interpretations provide us with another perspective on the past?

Richard I. Cohen, Autor von “Jewish Icons. Art and Society in Modern Europe”, ist Professor für französisch-jüdische Geschichte an der Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

Vortrag in englischer Sprache.

Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME) is not-for-profit [501 (C) (3)], grass-roots community of scholars who have united to promote honest, fact-based, and civil discourse, especially in regard to Middle East issues. We believe that ethnic, national, and religious hatreds, including anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism, have no place in our institutions, disciplines, and communities. We employ academic means to address these issues.
