Dear Colleague,

On the heels of the recent BDS Conference at the University of Pennsylvania at https://spme.org/articles/8493/4/19/BDS-and-Academia.html and “Israel Apartheid Week” on many campuses across the country, we thought it would be a good time to come together and talk about how to promote academic freedom and academic integrity and to respond to ethnic and religious hatred in our institutions.

SPME is always seeking to mobilize faculty who support civil discourse and honest debate on campus, especially with reference to the Middle East. We invite you to a gathering with speaker Professor Elie Rekhess. His topic will be Palestinian Islamism: Between Ideology and Pragmatism.

Professor Rekhess (Ph.D. Tel-Aviv University) is a leading historian of the contemporary Middle East. His fields of expertise include the Israeli-Arab conflict, Palestinian politics, Islamic resurgence, the Arab Minority in Israel and Jewish-Arab relations. He has authored and edited more than a dozen books on those topics. His most recent book, entitled Muslim Minorities in Non-Muslim Majority States, was published in Hebrew in 2011.

He was born in Haifa (Mt. Carmel) and raised in Israel and Italy. He is presently the Visiting Crown Chair in Middle East Studies at Northwestern University and co-chair of its Middle East Forum. Concurrently, Professor Rekhess is a Senior Research Fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University.

He has served as a Strategic Advisor to Prime Minister Ehud Barak and as an Advisor to the Ministerial Committee on the Arabs in Israel. Rekhess is a regular public lecturer and television commentator on the current situation in the Middle East, focusing on the “Arab Spring” and the rise of the Islamic trend.
