Alex Joffe, PhD is editor of SPME’s monthly BDS Monitor. He is an archaeologist and historian specializing in the Middle East and contemporary international affairs. Educated at Cornell University and the University of Arizona. Among other topics he has written extensively on the BDS movement and contemporary antisemitism.
The end of the academic year sees the BDS movement with few tangible gains but growing support from the burgeoning ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ (DEI) industry. From campuses to corporations there is a movement to target Israel and marginalize Jews in the name of ‘equity,’ which has replaced merit as the organizing principle of American life. Coupled with the uniform hostility of the ‘human rights’ industry, lately manifest in opposition to the IHRA definition, there are few reasons to hope for the fair treatment of Israel inside or outside of academia.
