BIO

Dr. Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at the Middle East Institute of Columbia University in New York City. From 1987 to 2003, he was a professor of Middle East History and Director of the Center for International Studies at the University of Chicago. He has also held teaching positions at the Lebanese University, American University of Beirut, and Georgetown University.

He is the author of many scholarly articles and books on various aspects of Middle East history and politics. His book, Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness, won the Middle East Studies Association’s prize for best book in 1997. His most recent book, The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood (2006) is a comprehensive account of the Palestinian quest for statehood since the days of the British Mandate.

Dr. Khalidi formerly served as president of the Middle East Studies Association and the American Task Force on Palestine. He is currently the editor of the Journal on Palestine Studies. He received a B.A. in History from Yale University in 1970 and a Ph.D. in Modern History fromOxford University in 1974.
