Dear Academicians,Last year, I was slated to present a keynote address at a conference at a British university. Then came the AUT boycott motion, which prompted me to cancel my appearance out of solidarity with my Israeli colleagues. See:However, I did participate in a scientific conference in Ein Gedi, Israel last summer. Participating were Israeli, Jordanian, Palestinian, American, Norwegian, and British scientists and health officials. It was a terrific meeting, from both scientific and social points of view. All fully participated in all activities.I also have the pleasure of serving on the Academic Committee of the Technion’s Board of Governors. At last summer’s meeting, I learned about the exciting work of the Stephen and Nancy Grand Water Research Institute, including an Israeli-Jordanian- Palestinian joint project to improve water treatment and wastewater reuse — seeThose who support a boycott of Israeli academics have no appreciation for or understanding of Israeli academic life and the interplay between Israeli, Palestinian and other scholars in the region and beyond. Quite apart from the overall offensiveness of singling out Israeli academics for such sanction, boycotting Israel’s academics would harm those NATFHE purportedly seeks to assist.Sincerely,Edward H.
