Two Reports- Haleh Esfandiari Released on Bail: Stranded in Iran Without Passport, Cannot Leave

TEHRAN: Iran yesterday released on bail US-Iranian academic Haleh Esfandiari, whose detention for the past three months on security charges further inflamed tensions with arch-enemy the United States.

“I can confirm that she was released on a bail of $320,000,” her lawyer Shirin Ebadi, the Nobel peace prize-winning rights activist said.

The move was welcomed as “encouraging news” by the White House, which had repeatedly called for the release of Esfandiari and three other US-Iranians held by Tehran.

Iranian television showed pictures of Esfandiari as she left Evin prison in northern Tehran, saying she was happy to be released and that she had been well-treated in jail.

“I feel happy. I thank those who made it possible that I can go home,” she said.

“They treated me very well in the section. I had a room, it was very big, it had a window. I could have air whenever I wanted. The food was very good.” Esfandiari said.

IRAN — Iranian-American scholar Haleh Esfandiari, 67, who was released from Iran’s notorious Evin prison on bail Tuesday, has no passport and cannot leave the country, her lawyer said Wednesday. She still faces charges of endangering Iran’s national security. Iran cites her work as the head of the Middle East program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.
