April 13, 2007 — Santa Cruz, CA — On Wednesday, April 18, 2007, Dr. Phyllis Chesler, one of the pioneering voices of the modern feminist movement, will be at UCSC for a lecture entitled “Feminism, Islam, and the Jews” sponsored by Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME). The lecture, part of a week of programming at schools throughout California, will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Merrill College Cultural Center.
Dr. Chesler is an emerita professor of psychology and women’s studies at CUNY, a journalist, and author of 13 books, including the groundbreaking international best seller “Women and Madness” and recently “The New Anti-Semitism” and “The Death of Feminism.” She was recently honored by being included in the landmark “Secular Islam Summit” in St. Petersburg, FL, on March 4 and 5, in which dissidents from Muslim societies met to advance their struggle for human rights, women’s rights, and the “inviolable freedom of the individual conscience.” She has served on the SPME Board of Directors from 2005-2007.
