Report on the Activities 2006/2007 of SPME Austria

SPME Austria was founded last year and is registered officially in Austria as organization as of on June 26, 2006). The first General Assembly took place on November 22nd 2006 at the lecture-room of the Archive of Documentation of the Austrian Resistance (DOEW).

Following Board members were elected:

The Board of SPME Austria met three times: December 6, 2006, March 14, 1007 and April 18, 2007.

The SPME- Austria mailinglist has 100 subscribers (scholars from the Universities in Vienna, Klagenfurt, Salzburg, Graz and Innsbruck, students, mainly of political Sciences, Jewish Studies and other)

SPME Austria has at the moment 14 dues-paying members.

SPME Austria has good contacts with the Jewish Community Vienna, The Austrian-Israeli Society, the internet- diary “Die Juedische”, Bund-Avoda (socialdemocrat Jews), Action against Anti-Semitism in Austria, Café Critique and the representations of students of Political Science and Jewish Studies.

On May 9th, 2007 SPME Austria organized its first event: Matthias Küntzel spoke on “Islamic Anti-Semitism and the Middle East Conflict”. Due to the imminent deal between the Austrian Oil Company OMV and the Iran Kuentzel dealt mainly with the shiite anti-Semitism and the situation in Iran. The lecture was held at the Jewish Museum in Vienna and was attendeed by more than 100 participants (mainly scholars of different disciplines and students – mainly Political Science).

SPME Austria co-sponsored three events in Vienna:

November 9th, 2006 Commemoration of the “Reichskristallnacht”

June 19, 2006 IRAN- ANTI-SEMTITSM AND REARMAMENT” (lecture by Wahied Wahdat – Hagh)

May 8th, 2007: FEAST OF DEMOCRACY on the occasion of the liberation of Austria in 1945 among others with speakers Ruth Contreras and SPME Board of Directors member Matthias Küntzel. The talks are going to be published in the German Edition of the SPME Faculty Forum.
