Re: British Union Boycott Against Israeli Academic Institutions

Dear Mr. Hunegs:

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding Britain’s University and College Union (UCU) vote to advance a boycott of Israeli academic Institutions.

I am proud to join my colleagues who lead other Big 10 Universities, and many other prominent American University leaders, in opposing any effort to quarantine Israeli universities and scholars. I wholeheartedly concur in Columbia University President Lee Bollinger’s sentiments that the UCU action is “antithetical to the fundamental values of the academy.”

The University of Minnesota is proud of its longstanding relationships with Israeli scholars and institutions, These relationships are an important demonstration of our University’s commitment to fostering international scholarly exchange. The University cannot condone any effort that would impede these vitally important international academic initiatives.

Thank you for bringing this important issue to our attention.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Bruininks
President
