SPME Petition 28

Statement & Petition Against Open Hillel

As an academic, I support the values of critical inquiry, inclusivity, and wide-ranging discourse on campus. Our classrooms and lecture halls and communities must be spaces that embrace diversity of experience and opinion, and enjoy maximal freedom of speech permitted by law.

I particularly reject any attempts to stifle conversation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ostracize student or faculty activists on either side, or monitor the speech of students or intellectuals in any campus venue.

I also believe in the dignity of different points of view. I therefore believe that the values above are best served by empowering different individuals and organizations to develop the distinct ideas and perspectives that will compete in the marketplace of ideas. Hillel International, with its current Standards of Partnership that exclude partnerships only with those who seek to damage and delegitimize Israel, is ideally positioned to be that place for those students who are supportive of Israel, particularly as it remains remarkably inclusive of individuals with competing perspectives.

Those who seek to promote alternative viewpoints, including anti-Zionist ones whose goal is to damage or delegitimize Israel, already have plentiful resources available on campus. Their desire to “open Hillel” will, rather than promote informed free speech and thoughtful debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in fact diminish it and suppress the vitality of Jewish life as fostered by Hillel itself.

By announcing my support for the existing policies and mission of Hillel International, I affirm my equal commitment to the values of critical inquiry and freedom of speech as well as to Jewish vitality and that of all marginalized and under-represented minorities.
