DAMASCUS, Syria, March 15 (UPI) — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly is working as an emissary for Syria and Israel in an attempt to renew the countries’ peace talks.

Citing a report from the Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar, The Jerusalem Post said Saturday that Syria and Israel are attempting to engage in renewed peace talks through the Turkish contact.

Israel reportedly favors quick and intensive peace negotiations between the two sides, while Syria has detailed several of its own conditions for any talks, the Post reported.

Quoting al-Akhbar, the Post said Syria wants “serious signs” from Israel that the Middle Eastern country will withdraw its forces “from all occupied Arab territories” before negotiations could begin.

The report also said Syria wants Israel to approach negotiations on other unidentified Arab avenues while any peace talks occur, along with stopping all military operations against regional Palestinians.
