Hamas has marked its 20th anniversary by threatening to start a new uprising against Israel.
The warning came in a pre-recorded speech by its exiled leader, Khaled Meshaal, who vowed the Islamist group would not give up violence.
Sentiments echoed by Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s deposed prime minister.
Up to 500,000 people packed into Gaza City’s central square for the rally – a crucial show of support for Hamas which is struggling to keep Gaza afloat as its faces economic and political isolation.
Israel closed Gaza to all but vital supplies after Hamas seized power in June from its rival, Fatah, the Palestinian president’s secular faction.
This week Israel said a major incursion is becoming more likely because it claims dozens of militants are continuing to fire missiles into the country.
