An investigation involving an alleged hate crime is under way on the campus of Temple University, where two men were allegedly assaulted, officials said Friday.

The alleged assailants are students at the school, NBC10 reported.

Philadelphia police are seeking warrants for four Temple University students in connection with the case, according to NBC10.

University officials said the two victims were seriously injured.

A witness told NBC10 that the victims left a restaurant and stood outside what used to be the AEPi Fraternity house, a nominally a Jewish fraternity. They were approached by the four students, who asked if they belonged to the fraternity.

The witness said that the victims answered “No,” and then someone made an anti-Semitic remark and one of the four Temple students threw a punch.

One of the victims suffered a broken orbital bone in his face and a broken nose, NBC10 reported.

The students have been suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary committee hearing. Temple University police in collaboration with the Philadelphia Police Department are actively pursuing criminal charges through the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

Officials did not say what school the men targeted in the attack attended. However, they were not Temple students, NBC10 reported.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon, Temple University President Ann Weaver Hart said, “We are taking this situation very seriously and will be developing programs for students and the broader university community to address issues of tolerance and civility on our campuses.”

“… Hate crimes will not be tolerated by Temple University. All manifestations of intolerance threaten the fabric of our institution and our society. Indeed, hatred violates the core values upon which this university was founded — values that are cherished by all of us in the extended Temple family.”
