This year marks 350 years since the return of the Jews to Britain. Yet the World Jewish Congress claims anti-Semitism in Europe is worse now than at any time since World War II, and the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks commented recently that “there have been times, the first in my memory, when it has been uncomfortable to be a Jew in Britain”.
How serious is anti-Semitism in Britain? Are we fighting a new war against old prejudices or is the threat posed grossly exaggerated?
Opinion Soup looks at both sides of the argument. Guest speakers Daniel Finkelstein of The Times, The Baroness Neuberger, Antony Lerman of the Institute of Jewish Policy Research and David Hirsh, Editor of the Engage website. With host Emily Maitlis from the BBC’s Newsnight.
