Stay tuned for re-opening of program in Summer 2010!

May 17 to June 28, 2009

The Office of Study Abroad and the Program in Jewish Studies together with the Departments of Religion and Asian and Middle East Studies (AMES), will offer an exciting six-week academic program of study in Jerusalem with study tours to the main historic sites in Israel and Jordan. Co-directed by Eric and Carol Meyers of the Religion Department, the program will offer two courses.

One course, RELIGION 175/ JEWISH STUDIES 111 (Art and Archaeology of the Biblical World), co-taught by Eric and Carol Meyers, Professors in the Religion Department, will focus on the material remains of important biblical sites, how they figure in the Bible’s account of the past, and how their meaning is constructed by people in the modern world. This course will pay special attention to the city of Jerusalem, which will also be the subject of the second course, AMES 174/ JEWISH STUDIES 133/ RELIGION 161Y (Jerusalem: Past and Present), taught by Shai Ginsberg, Assistant Professor in AMES. He will be assisted by Doron Wilfand, PhD candidate in Religion and a registered tour guide in Israel. This course will examine the confused relations between the physical spaces of Jerusalem and the public accounts that they inform; it will consider how the materiality of Jerusalem has been shaped by the legal, literary, and religious discourse about it. Graduate credit is also available for both courses.

Living and learning in Jerusalem, the historic cradle of the three main western religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), presents an unparalleled opportunity for students to understand these traditions by becoming familiar with the setting in which they emerged. In addition, learning how they vie for space in Israel’s most populated and divided city allows one to experience firsthand the challenges of the current Middle East peace process.

Modern Hebrew tutorials may be arranged according to expressed needs.

Engaging Duke in Israel

Students who are participating in the “Duke in Israel” Study Abroad program are eligible to extend their stay in Jerusalem to participate in a 4-week Duke Engage experience. Students who participate in the follow-up DukeEngage portion of the program will work in one of several organizations that promote social justice in disadvantaged communities. The organizations, which are all based in Jerusalem, focus on providing social assistance to new Ethiopian immigrants, community education, creating local leadership for social change, women’s rights, and environmental justice.

Students will begin the Duke Engage portion of the hybrid program on June 28th and conclude on July 26.

Students will spend their entire DukeEngage experience in Jerusalem, Israel with occasional “field trips” and weekend trips to other regions if desired. For more information on the Duke Engage portion of the Duke in Israel summer program, please visit the Duke Engage website: http://dukeengage.duke.edu/immersion/international.

Students wishing to apply to the Engaging Duke in Israel hybrid summer program will need to apply to both Duke Engage and the Office of Study Abroad by Monday, December 15, 2008.

For general information on policies and procedures related to Duke’s summer hybrid programs, including application details, please refer to the student guidelines.
