CORAL GABLES (CBS4) ― University of Miami police are investigating an act of vandalism at the university: a swastika drawn on the wall near the Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies.

The swastika, a historical symbol of hatred for Jews, was found on the wall Tuesday near the men’s restroom in the Merrick Building. It was the second time in nearly a year the symbol has been spray painted near the Judaic studies building.

UM President Donna E. Shalala released the following statement:

On Tuesday someone drew a swastika on a wall in the men’s restroom near the Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies in the Merrick Building. This incident and a similar one that occurred last November in the same location have been reported to University Police and are under investigation. Defacement of University property is a crime-and to do so with this symbol of hatred, which is offensive to all of us, is a despicable and cowardly act. The University of Miami is a place where all are welcome in a spirit of learning and acceptance. There is no place in our community for bigotry and intolerance. I condemn these acts in the strongest of terms on behalf of the University.

“It is truly disturbing that someone would make such a hateful statement, even more so on a college campus adjacent to the Jewish Studies Center,” Brian Siegal, AJC Miami office director, told our news partners at the Miami Herald.
