Dear SAR friends,

We are pleased to inform you that Iranian Professor Ramin Jahanbegloo was released on bail from Evin prison last week. Thanks to the many concerned individuals who responded to the June alert and wrote letters of appeal on his behalf. We are so grateful for your support.

Professor Jahanbegloo was arrested on May 6 and held in custody for having unspecified links with foreigners and working to undermine the Iranian government. While the conditions of his August 30th release are unclear, it has been reported that he confessed to attempting to undermine the Iranian government and had made an apology.

Many academic associations, human rights groups and over 400 academics worldwide publicly called for his release after his arrest in May. Professor Jahanbegloo who is also a Canadian citizen, is head of the Department of Contemporary Studies at the Cultural Research Bureau in Tehran. He is a respected political theorist, philosopher and author of more than 20 books in English, French and Persian. He has studied and taught at Iranian, European and North American institutions and is admired by colleagues around the world for his devotion to intercultural exchange and scholarship and for disseminating information about Iran’s complex society and its rich contributions to world history.

We welcome Professor Jahanbegloo’s release and will continue to monitor his case. Many thanks for your support.

Best wishes for a fruitful academic year,
