“Boycott Israel” stickies found on Israeli products in Thornhill, Ontario

A picture featuring  a “boycott Israel” sticky note on a container of Sabra Hummus went viral on Monday, August 8, 2016 in Jewish Facebook groups in Toronto and its northern suburbs.

The picture was taken a day earlier at Sobeys supermarket in Thornhill (Bathurst and Radherford) by a Jewish resident of Richmond Hill who asked to remain anonymous. With a Palestinian flag in the background and a link to the anti Israel site https://www.palestinecampaign.org, the sticky note read: “Boycott Israeli Apartheid” and “Free Palestine”. At least 5 containers of Sabra Hummus had the anti-Israel sticky notes on their lid.

The customer approached one of the employees who told him she had no idea about it and promised to bring this issue to the awareness of the branch’s manager.

The next morning, he returned to the supermarket, and this time he couldn’t find any sticky notes on Sabra Hummus  containers. On Monday afternoon, CIJnews conducted a thorough inspection of the aisles with negative results.

The customer called York Regional Police to report the incident. The Police told him that it does not fall in the category of hate crime and that the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau was assigned to look into his complaint.

Speaking to CIJnews the Jewish customer said: “I was shocked. In this way it [persecution of Jews] had started in Europe. It is an expression of hatred towards Jews, and particularly in an area with a big Jewish population.”

An anti-Israeli sticky note campaign was initiated a few months ago by Canadians for peace and Justice in the Middle East (CPJME). This radical left and pro Palestinian organization encourages Canadians to sign up and receive free stickers for marking Israeli products in retail stores because of “Israel’s policy”. CPJME fully supports the “Palestinian cause and struggle”, including the so-called “right of return” demand which, in fact, means the destruction of the Jewish State of Israel.
